The Central Corridor has reached a new milestone with the official launch of cargo transportation services on Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). The new freight service, connecting Pugu Station in Dar es Salaam to Ihumwa Station in Dodoma, was launched on Friday, 27 June 2025.
This important development builds on the success of SGR passenger services, which have already moved over 2.5 million passengers since they began on 14 June 2024. The launch of the cargo service marks the beginning of a more efficient, reliable, and modern way of transporting goods within Tanzania and across the Central Corridor.
The cargo train will run daily, departing from Pugu at 10:00 a.m., stopping in Morogoro at noon to allow passenger trains to pass, and arriving in Dodoma at approximately 8:05 p.m. In the coming months, more trains and wagons are expected to be added to increase the capacity for moving cargo.
This is a major step toward enhancing trade and logistics in the region. The Secretariat of the CCTTFA congratulates the Tanzania Railway Corporation and the Government of Tanzania for this achievement and their continued commitment to modern and seamless transport solutions.
The introduction of SGR cargo services is not only a win for Tanzania, but for all partner states along the Corridor. It supports faster, safer, and greener transportation of goods, making the Central Corridor more competitive and better connected.
