The second group of 5 Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) cadets sponsored by the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) on 17th January 2020 boarded Zanzibar Shipping Corporation Ships to commence their 6 months sea time training.

The CCTTFA entered into a partnership with DMI to train and provide capacity building to Member States Stakeholders in Maritime Sector. In the first phase of the initiative, CCTTFA is sponsoring 10 students from the five Central Corridor Member Countries to study maritime courses at DMI in order to bridge the gap of lack of expertise in maritime transport and logistics sectors.

The 10 students started their 3-year programme in February 2017. After completion, they will be awarded with Class 3 Professional Certificates of Officers of Navigational/Engineering Watch. The completion time is expected to be in June 2021.

As part of their training, Cadet Officers must undergo practical supervised sea time training aboard sea going vessels for one year. Zanzibar Shipping Corporation in partnership with DMI accepted our students on their ships. The sea time training is being conducted on three ships:

  1. MV Mapinduzi 11. This both a Passenger and cargo ship. It loads 1200 passengers and cargo.
  2. MV Ukombozi 1 – 2500 GRT Tanker
  3. MV Ukombozi 11 – a new 3500 GRT Tanker

A rotational arrangement for students on sea training was agreed upon due to limited ships availability – the first 5 students, were sent on sea time for 6 months which they completed in Mid – October 2019 and the remaining 5 students remained in class to start on their final year academic class work.
