Kindu, Maniema Province, Democratic Republic of Congo from 3 to 6 August 2026
The Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) successfully coordinated a high-level technical mission by the United Republic of Tanzania to Kindu, Maniema Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 3 to 6 August 2026, as part of the ongoing Transport Infrastructure Development Programme for Strengthening Trade between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The mission brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Transport of Tanzania, Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), the Embassy of Tanzania in the DRC, The Embassy of DRC in Tanzania, private sector representatives and the CCTTFA Secretariat.
The working visit implemented resolutions adopted during the Tanzania – DRC Steering Committee Meeting held in Kigoma in March 2026 and aimed at accelerating bilateral cooperation in transport infrastructure, logistics, aviation, railways, inland waterways and private sector development.
During the mission, the delegation undertook comprehensive technical inspections of Kindu National Airport, the Kindu Railway Station, and Kindu Inland River Port to assess their operational status and identify priority investments required to strengthen multimodal connectivity between Maniema Province and Tanzania through the Central Corridor.
The delegation further engaged with Government institutions and private sector stakeholders to explore opportunities for expanding trade, investment and logistics cooperation. Discussions confirmed the significant economic potential of Maniema Province, particularly in mining, agriculture and trade, while highlighting the need for improved transport infrastructure to unlock regional economic growth.
A major milestone of the mission was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CCTTFA and the Government of Maniema Province for the implementation of a strategic inland waterways transport project involving the construction of a 500-tonne river freight barge and a 700 Horsepower (HP) push boat to improve connectivity between Kindu and Ubundu.
The mission reaffirmed the need for the two Governments to accelerate implementation of strategic transport infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation of the Kindu-Kalemie Railway, modernization of Kindu Port, upgrading of Kindu National Airport and strengthening multimodal transport connectivity between Maniema Province and the Port of Dar es Salaam through the Central Corridor.
These initiatives are expected to reduce logistics costs, improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade, attract investment and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development for the people of both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Republic of Tanzania.
