STANDARD GAUGE RAILWAY CONTRACTOR TO BE UNVEILED IN FEBRUARY 2017

The Contractor for the construction of the first phase (202 KM) of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro will be announced in February, 2017, the government has announced.

Speaking during a special programme on the National Broadcaster, TBC1, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications in-charge of transport sector, Dr Leonard Chamriho said the evaluation of bidders was in final stage.

Dr Chamriho noted that by February the contractor would be unveiled and sign the contract to begin the works.

The PS further revealed that the entire SGR line from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza (1,216 KM) will be built in five phases and all tenders for phase 2 to 5 had also already been floated.

“We expect to open tenders for phase two to five in April this year” said PS Chamriho

According to him, the other phases will be from Morogoro to Dodoma (333 KM), Dodoma to Tabora (294 KM), Tabora to Isaka (133 KM) and Isaka to Mwanza (254 KM).

The construction of the first phase would take about three years to complete. Other phases are expected be completed in four years’ time, he said.
